Assam CM says BJP’s three Gogois ‘stronger’ than opposition trio

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that three leaders with the surname Gogoi in the BJP are “stronger” than three opposition leaders sharing the same surname.

Referring to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Sarma said BJP leaders Taranga Gogoi, Pabitra Margherita and Chakradhar Gogoi were “more powerful”.

“Pabitra Margherita writes ‘Margherita’ as his surname, but he is a Gogoi. The strong Gogois are on our side, while those selling Assamese identity, religion and culture are in the opposition,” Sarma said.

He also launched sharp attacks on the opposition leaders. “Akhil Gogoi supports Bangladeshi Miyas everywhere. Lurinjyoti Gogoi also sides with Bangladeshis, and I don’t need to say more about Gaurav Gogoi — you already know everything,” he said.

With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, political activity in the state has intensified. The BJP and opposition parties have stepped up their campaigns, trading allegations and counter-allegations.

The chief minister has repeatedly targeted the three opposition leaders in recent public meetings.

The issue of “Miya Muslims” has emerged as a contentious subject in the run-up to the polls. Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam are often referred to as “Miyas”, a term that has become politically charged, with sections of the BJP alleging large-scale illegal infiltration from Bangladesh — a claim strongly contested by opposition parties.

Earlier, Sarma had drawn criticism after stating that he encouraged action against “Miya Muslims” to prevent alleged demographic changes, remarks that sparked controversy in the poll-bound state.
