Guwahati, Apr 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court of India’s decision to stay the Telangana High Court order granting a week-long transit anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case linked to allegations involving his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said he had faith in the judicial process and questioned the jurisdiction under which the relief was granted.
“I believe the Telangana High Court cannot issue transit bail as he (Khera) is not a resident of the state. The Assam government approached the Supreme Court, which has now stayed the order. Let the law take its course,” Sarma said.
The case stems from allegations made by Khera regarding multiple passports and undisclosed foreign assets linked to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, which the Sarma family has strongly denied as baseless.
The apex court, while staying the High Court’s order, said Khera is free to seek anticipatory bail from the competent jurisdictional court in Assam, where the FIR has been registered.
