Must read

Guwahati, Feb 5: The Congress staged a protest on Monday, the first day of the Budget Session of Assam Assembly, over the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ issue.

The opposition, led by Congress, boycotted Governor’s speech after the opposition leaders were not provided with the speech copy. The opposition MLAs also protested outside the Assembly with several issues holding placards before the session began.

The Governor wrapped up his speech just one minute after opposition disrupted his speech.

Talking to media persons, Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, said, “Today is an unfortunate (day) because the Governor made the speech but we are not provided with the speech copy. The government has failed on all fronts, be it justice to law and order, justice to the tribals, justice to the Assam Accord, be it justice to the flood and erosion affected people.”

He further highlighted the case of a tea garden girl being molested allegedly by a BJP worker, last year, but the culprit remains at large. “Similarly, SI Junmoni Rabha case, she died under mysterious condition but till date nothing has been done to apprehend the culprit. Even during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ our president was attacked, our vehicle was attacked and our posters and banners were torn. After the Assam Accord, a committee was formed under retired justice Biplab Sarma to execute the clause 6 but nothing has been done till date,” Saikia stated.

He further attacked the government, claimed that the government has been silent despite promising to give ST status to six ethic communities.
