Dibrugarh, Feb 4: Four prisoners staged a daring escape from the Sadiya District Jail in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering a massive search operation.
The escapees have been identified as Nabin Buragohain, Amlanjyoti Chetia, Sasadhar Deori, and Huntu Sonowal.
Soon after the jailbreak, Sadiya Police launched an extensive manhunt to trace and apprehend the four men. The incident occurred in the Chapakhowa area and has raised serious concerns over possible security lapses at the jail facility.
District authorities have since sealed several exit points across Tinsukia district to prevent the escapees from crossing district or state borders.
Police sources said specific leads are being pursued, but no arrests had been made as of Wednesday evening.
An internal inquiry is expected to be initiated to ascertain whether there was any negligence on the part of jail staff on duty.
This is not the first such incident in Assam, as there have been previous instances of jailbreaks in the state, though the escapees were later apprehended.
