Assam Government issues SOPs for hassle-free polling on May 7, amidst inclement weather forecast

Guwahati, May 6: As the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms in Northeast India. Considering the potential inclement weather, Assam government has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to all District Collectors (DCs) and District Electoral Officers (DEOs) to safeguard voter comfort and safety during the election process on May 7.

According to the directive the measures are designed to provide adequate protection from rain and harsh sunlight, ensuring a comfortable voting experience for citizens across the state. Key SOPs include providing adequate shade and shelter, utilizing long verandahs in schools for queue lines and, if necessary, installing tents, or other temporary structures to shield voters from rain and sunlight. Ensuring proper drainage, clearing potential drainage issues around polling stations to prevent waterlogging, maintaining safe and dry conditions for voters.

Monitoring weather conditions, keeping abreast of the latest weather forecasts and making necessary adjustments to election plans based on updated information. Encouraging the public to carry umbrellas and other protective gear to the polling stations through proper communication.

Coordinating with School Management Committees (SMCs), collaborating with SMCs to utilize their resources for minor expenses and coordinating with authorities to address any unforeseen weather-related challenges.

Aiding with elderly and disabled voters ensuring that elderly and disabled voters receive necessary assistance to navigate any challenging conditions on polling day.

These SOPs are placed to conduct free, fair, and safe elections, even in the face of adverse weather conditions. By taking proactive measures to protect voter comfort and safety, the Assam government aims to uphold the democratic process and facilitate high voter turnout on May 7.
