Guwahati, June 16: In a tragic incident, two minors were buried alive in a landslide in Assam’s Goalpara district after heavy rains triggered a landslide in the area on Thursday morning.
According to reports, the side walls of their house collapsed due to the landslide, burying the two minor siblings alive under its debris.
Meanwhile, the state Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) team has recovered their bodies from the debris.
At least six people have died so far in landslides across Assam in the past three days. The state has registered 44 deaths due to floods and landslides this year.
Due to heavy rain, a house in Guwahati’s Kamakhya was damaged after getting hit by a landslide in the early hours on Thursday.
During the landslide, one person identified as Moni Dutta was severely injured while a house belonging to a person named Mandeep Mazumdar was destroyed.
Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media. The visuals show debris triggered by a landslide breaking one of the walls of the house. No casualties have been reported.
On Wednesday, one person was killed and two others sustained injuries after a tree fell upon an auto-rickshaw near Karimganj fire services station.
To tackle the situation from turning worse, the district administration has declared all educational institutions (Government & Private) to be closed down for Thursday with the exception of centres conducting examinations which have already been scheduled.
The flood situation in the state too remained severe as it has been witnessing heavy rain.
As per the daily report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have ended up affecting 314 villages across 18 districts in the state.
As per ASDMA, the 18 districts are Bajali, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri Kamrup, Kamrup (M) and Nalbari.
The report added that till Wednesday evening at least 10,851 children among 74,116 people remained flood-affected.
