Assam Opposition unites to demand court-monitored probe into Zubeen Garg’s death

Guwahati, October 3: In a significant political development, 16 Opposition parties in Assam came together in Guwahati on Friday, demanding a fast-track, court-monitored judicial inquiry into the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

The joint meeting was convened by the Raijor Dal, led by MLA Akhil Gogoi. Speaking after the meeting, Gogoi outlined three unanimous resolutions:

“First, all Opposition parties have decided to demand a judicial inquiry into the murder of Assam’s cultural heartthrob Zubeen Garg. Second, financial irregularities related to the organisers of the North East Festival must be probed. Third, the government must call an all-party meeting at the earliest. On October 19, a massive rally and tribute programme will be organised across Assam, with participation from artists and citizens.”

CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar stressed that the inquiry must be time-bound to ensure impartiality.
“The death case should be investigated in a fast-track manner within 90 days under High Court supervision. Otherwise, it won’t be fair. The government is trying to divert attention, but we demand a credible and speedy probe,” he said.

Congress leader and former MP Abdul Khaleq echoed the demand, underlining that it aligns with the family’s call for justice.
“Our party also wants a High Court-monitored judicial inquiry and a fast-track trial. Zubeen Ji’s family has sought this, and so do we. The probe must also cover the financial angles linked to the case. On October 19, we will hold a public tribute for Zubeen Garg,” Khaleq said.

Shiv Sena’s Assam unit president Ram Narayan Singh accused the government of negligence.
“The government failed to provide necessary facilities, even in handling Zubeen’s body. It is deceiving the public. We will submit our demands in writing to the High Court,” Singh alleged.

Friday’s meeting marks the first united Opposition front on the issue, setting the stage for statewide protests and a mass rally on October 19 in memory of Zubeen Garg.
