Guwahati, Apr 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday rolled out a series of voter-focused promises, including two free LPG cylinders annually, a monthly stipend for graduates, and assurances on jobs and free education, as campaigning intensifies ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Addressing an election rally, Sarma said beneficiaries would receive one free LPG cylinder before Bihu and another ahead of Durga Puja. “You won’t have to pay for these cylinders, the government will cover them,” he said, seeking support for BJP candidates.
The announcement comes amid heightened political activity, with parties stepping up outreach efforts in the final phase of campaigning. The promise also follows recent allegations by the opposition—led by the “3Gs”—of black-marketing of LPG cylinders in the state.
Officials said oil marketing companies have carried out over 2,000 inspections in response to complaints, issuing show-cause notices to 18 LPG distributors after irregularities surfaced through social media reports and consumer grievances.
In addition to fuel support, Sarma announced a ₹2,500 monthly stipend for college graduates for at least one year to ease the transition into employment. He also reiterated commitments to expand job opportunities and provide free education.
The chief minister made the announcements while campaigning for BJP candidate Suruj Dehingia in Mahmora constituency.
