Guwahati, Apr 6: The political confrontation ahead of the Assam Assembly elections sharpened further on Monday, with Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi launching a direct attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged foreign assets and business links tied to his family.
Dismissing Sarma’s recent allegations of a “Pakistan-linked” conspiracy as a diversion, Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of misleading the public and said the Congress would expose what he described as undisclosed properties and business interests abroad. He raised pointed questions on whether Sarma’s family holds a “Gold Card” residency in Dubai, owns property there, and whether such assets were declared in official election affidavits, asserting that the issue was one of transparency and accountability.
Gogoi further demanded that Sarma be disqualified if the allegations are proven and called for a probe by central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate. He also alleged that, if voted to power, the Congress would initiate legal action into what he termed “illegal properties, businesses and links,” widening the scope of the attack to include broader claims of irregularities.
The remarks come amid an intensifying political standoff between the BJP and the Congress, after Sarma earlier alleged that opposition leaders had relied on materials sourced from a Pakistani social media group—an accusation strongly rejected by the Congress. With both sides trading serious charges, the controversy has added a new layer of confrontation to the election campaign, bringing issues of foreign links, asset disclosure, and political credibility into sharp focus.
