Assam Polls 2026: Sarma alleges Pakistan link in Congress campaign, FIR filed by wife over ‘fabricated documents’

Guwahati, Apr 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday escalated his attack on the Congress, alleging that a “Pakistani social media group” was behind recent allegations made against him and his wife, even as a police complaint has been filed over what he described as “fabricated documents.”

Addressing the media, Sarma claimed that materials used in press conferences by Congress leaders Pawan Khera in Delhi and Gaurav Gogoi in Guwahati were sourced from a Pakistani network.

“During our research, we found that the entire material presented in yesterday’s press conferences was supplied by a Pakistani social media group,” Sarma said, adding that Pakistani media had aired at least 11 talk shows on the Assam elections in the past 10 days, allegedly favouring a Congress victory.

He termed the development “serious” and said the matter would be examined by law enforcement agencies. “How Pakistan is trying to influence the Assam election is very important,” he added.

The Chief Minister also rejected allegations made by the Congress regarding his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, who was accused of holding multiple passports and concealing property details. Sarma said the claims were based on “photoshopped” and “fraudulent” documents, including what he described as a “lost passport” misused to frame her.

In response, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma filed an FIR late Saturday night. Sarma said the case could attract serious penal provisions, including charges related to forgery and cheating, and provisions dealing with attempts to influence election outcomes using fabricated material.

“Using false documents to influence an election can invite stringent punishment, including life imprisonment,” he said, referring to relevant sections under the law.

Sarma further alleged that he had prior inputs about the issue. “On March 27, I had alerted a journalist that something like this was about to happen,” he said, adding that the matter had been reported to the Government of India.

Taking a sharp dig at Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Sarma questioned why he would “take help from a Pakistani social media group” to level allegations.
