Wokha gets ASF respite as surveillance finds no fresh cases

Must read

Kohima, July 16: In a major relief for pig farmers, the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Department has confirmed that no cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) were detected in Wokha district during a surveillance and inspection drive conducted on Wednesday.

The inspection, led by Chief Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Officer Dr K.N. Zubemo Humtsoe, covered pig stockyards, butcher shops and meat outlets in Wokha town and nearby areas to assess the disease situation.

The clean report comes amid growing concern among farmers following recent ASF outbreaks reported in parts of the state. In Wokha, where backyard piggery is a key source of livelihood for many rural households, the confirmation has eased fears of a fresh outbreak.

Alongside the surveillance, the department also conducted an animal insurance awareness campaign in parts of the district, encouraging farmers to insure their livestock against unforeseen losses.

Farmer organisations welcomed the initiative and urged the government to expand insurance awareness and coverage across Nagaland to strengthen the resilience of the state’s livestock sector.

Officials said surveillance will continue across the district to ensure early detection of any suspected cases and to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever.
