Dibrugarh, Apr 6: The growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by political parties is emerging as a concern in the run-up to the Assam Assembly polls, with experts warning that misleading content is being pushed to influence voters.

A surge in AI-based content on social media—ranging from altered images to exaggerated claims—has marked this election season. Observers say both the ruling and opposition parties are using such tools to shape narratives and gain an edge.

“Both sides are using AI tools to create and spread misleading content. The political fight is no longer limited to speeches or rallies—there is a parallel battle on social media,” said a social media expert.

He added that election campaigns are now increasingly centred online, where such content spreads quickly and often without verification.

This is among the first Assembly elections in Assam where AI-driven content has become so visible. Political parties have stepped up their digital campaigns, with some leaders sharing visuals and claims that are difficult to verify.

“We have seen leaders using AI tools to create images and push claims during campaigns. A lot of the campaigning is now happening online,” said Anand Sharma, a student of Dibrugarh University.

Political analyst Rupak Bhattacharjee said the trend is worrying. “AI is making it easier to turn disinformation into something that looks real.

Once it spreads on social media, people start believing it. Almost all parties are trying to use this to their advantage,” he said.

With campaigning increasingly moving to digital platforms, concerns are growing over how such content could influence voters, especially in the absence of strong checks on misinformation.
