Assam to set up Centre of Excellence with WEF

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 23: Assam is set to strengthen its global economic engagement with the proposed establishment of a Centre of Excellence in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

Founded in 1971 by economist Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum is an international organisation for public-private cooperation. Best known for its annual meeting in Davos, the WEF brings together global political leaders, business executives, policymakers, academics and civil society representatives to discuss key global challenges, including economic growth, climate change, technology and geopolitics.

In a post on X, Sarma said he held a “very fruitful meeting” on Wednesday evening at the WEF with Eugene Willemsen, CEO (International Beverages) of PepsiCo, and Caroline Berson, Vice President, Government Relations. During the meeting, he outlined the state government’s plan to ensure assured institutional credit for potato farmers through an exclusive tripartite agreement involving the State Bank of India, PepsiCo and the Assam government.

The discussions also covered PepsiCo’s expansion plans in Assam, a review of progress at its Nalbari plant, and ways to further strengthen the company’s engagement with the state’s farming community, Sarma said.

Separately, the Chief Minister said that during his meeting with the WEF leadership team, a decision was taken to set up a Centre of Excellence in Assam on a theme of national and state importance. He added that the state is also working towards building a long-term partnership with the WEF to leverage key platforms such as its annual summits in Davos and other global forums.

Highlighting the Northeast’s growing economic significance, Sarma said the region is witnessing rapid infrastructure expansion, reflected in rising cement consumption and increased industrial activity. He also pointed to Assam’s untapped potential in sectors including hydrocarbons, renewable energy, tourism and agri-based industries.
