Shillong, Jan 22: A POCSO Court in Shillong has sentenced a 43-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault on a minor girl in East Khasi Hills district, police said on Thursday.
The convict, Jogitar Japang, was found guilty by the court of M.K. Lyngoh, Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills, which delivered its judgment on January 20, 2026, in connection with a case registered at Rynjah Police Station.
According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, the case dates back to November 17, 2018, when an FIR was lodged alleging that Japang had sexually assaulted the complainant’s 10-year-old daughter. The police registered the case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act along with provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
Following investigation, Japang was arrested and a chargesheet was filed in June 2020. During the course of the trial, the accused remained in judicial custody for three months and one day, police said.
Taking into account the period already spent in custody, the court ordered the convict to serve the remaining sentence of nine years, eight months and 29 days in jail, completing a total punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment.
The case was investigated by Woman Police Sub-Inspector Lily D. Sangma, who is presently posted in East Khasi Hills district.
