Shillong, Jan 22: In a move aimed at easing congestion around one of Shillong’s busiest healthcare hubs, the Meghalaya government has relocated 29 street vendors from the Civil Hospital junction to a newly developed vending zone at the Public Works Department (PWD) premises in Barik.
The relocation, carried out by the Urban Affairs Department, has resulted in the complete clearance of the footpath in front of Civil Hospital—an area long flagged for pedestrian bottlenecks and obstruction to ambulance movement.
Officials say the change has already led to smoother pedestrian flow, improved traffic movement, and quicker access for emergency vehicles to the hospital.
According to the department, vendors who were shifted to the Barik site have expressed satisfaction with the new arrangement, citing improved space, better organisation, and protection from Shillong’s frequent rain and strong winds. The vending zone features covered structures, designated stalls, and better visibility for customers.
This is the second such relocation drive undertaken by the state government, following an earlier effort at Khyndailad.
