Flood fury in Assam’s Dhemaji: 300-metre iron bridge washed away

Must read

Dibrugarh, June 28: The flood situation in Assam’s Dhemaji district worsened on Sunday after a 300-metre-long iron bridge over the Kemi River was washed away, severing a crucial link between the Kemi-Purana Jelom area and Jonai.

Residents said the river’s water level began rising sharply around 11 am and intensified rapidly within half an hour. By around 11.30 am, the swollen river had overflowed its banks and swept away the bridge.

The collapse has completely cut off connectivity between several villages on either side of the river, disrupting movement and raising concerns over access to relief and emergency services.

Reacting to the deteriorating situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government was closely monitoring the floods and would deploy all available resources for relief and rehabilitation.

“Since the flood situation has unfolded in Dhemaji, I’ve been closely monitoring the situation. We are deeply saddened by the impact it has had on the lives of our people and in this difficult time, we firmly stand with them,” Sarma said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister said the state was adopting a “whole-of-government approach” to tackle the crisis and had directed Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta to camp in Dhemaji and oversee relief operations.

“We are leaving no stone unturned to mitigate the impact of these floods on our people,” he said.

The washing away of the bridge is expected to further compound the flood woes in Dhemaji, one of Assam’s most flood-prone districts, where heavy rainfall in the upper catchments and rising river levels have inundated several low-lying areas.

Authorities are assessing the damage and exploring alternative arrangements to restore connectivity and ensure the delivery of relief materials to affected communities.
