Assam workers allegedly assaulted in Arunachal Pradesh

Must read

Guwahati, March 12: Several workers from Assam have alleged that they were assaulted by staff members of a private contractor in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to reports, the workers were engaged in a project of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) at Hunli when the alleged assault took place.

The controversy reportedly began when one of the labourers approached the Managing Director’s office at Jhandu Infratech, the private company executing the project, seeking an advance payment of ₹10,000.

The worker had reportedly requested the advance due to an urgent medical situation involving his mother in his home village in Assam. However, his request was allegedly refused.

“The situation suddenly escalated into a heated confrontation, during which the labourer was allegedly assaulted by four to five men from the company. The victim sustained injuries to his head and ears during the attack,” an official said.

According to sources, the situation worsened when another worker went to the company office to question why his colleague had been beaten.

“When another labourer went to ask why his fellow worker had been attacked, he was also assaulted by a group of four men during the altercation,” the official added.

Following the incident, the workers demanded justice and immediate payment of their pending wages, stating that they depend on their daily earnings to support their families.

The injured workers have appealed to Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, to intervene and ensure action in the matter.

Sources said this was not the first such incident involving migrant workers from Assam in Arunachal Pradesh. In earlier cases too, workers recruited from different parts of Assam had reportedly faced payment disputes after completing construction work.

“Most construction sites in Arunachal Pradesh employ workers from Assam because local manpower skilled in construction work is limited,” an official said.
