Tura, March 12: The bishops of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tura have called for a day of prayer and fasting on March 13 to seek peace in Garo Hills and across the world.
In a joint appeal issued from the Bishop’s House in Tura, Andrew R. Marak and Jose Chirackal urged priests, religious leaders and the faithful to conduct special prayers and observe fasting in churches, institutions and homes.
The bishops expressed concern over the recent violence in Garo Hills, noting that after years of peace and development the region is once again witnessing unrest. They said the disturbances have resulted in loss of lives, injuries and widespread damage to both public and private property, while many residents have been forced to take shelter in relief camps.
They also pointed out that essential commodities have become scarce and normal life, including examinations and daily activities, has been severely disrupted across the region.
Calling on communities to reject violence, the church leaders appealed for sincere prayers so that people may live in mutual respect, peace and harmony. They also emphasised the need to resolve conflicts through peaceful dialogue and in accordance with the law.
The bishops further urged citizens to do whatever is possible to help restore peace and normalcy in Garo Hills, praying that “the Prince of Peace” may fill the land and the world with lasting peace.
