Imphal, June 26: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday called for a collective fight against drug abuse, urging people to stay away from drugs and saying that a healthy and progressive society can only be built by rejecting substance abuse.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the Western Gate of Kangla in Imphal while flagging off the 10-km Mega Awareness Run organised to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s observance was held under the theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”

Appreciating the enthusiastic participation, Khemchand Singh said he was encouraged to see so many young men and women joining the awareness run. Raising the slogan “No to Drugs,” he joined other dignitaries and participants in taking an anti-drug pledge.
Director General of Police Mukesh Singh said the fight against drugs is not the responsibility of the police alone but requires the active participation of every citizen. He urged people from all sections of society to join the campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The DGP also participated in the 10-km run in the Men’s 40 years and above category.
The awareness run, organised by the Manipur Police Department, was attended by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, senior police officials and other dignitaries.

Around 1,300 participants competed in four categories—Open Men, Open Women, Men (40 years and above) and Women (40 years and above). Winners of the first three positions will receive cash prizes of ₹10,000, ₹5,000 and ₹3,000 respectively, besides consolation prizes for selected participants.
The event was organised to encourage greater public participation in the state’s campaign against drug abuse and promote a healthier, drug-free society.
