Shillong, Jun 26: United Democratic Party leader and Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla on Friday said the party remains stable for now, but added that the UDP has a plan to field new candidates and retain seats if any member decides to quit ahead of elections.
“For me, I can say it is stable, of course. I am here and it is stable till now,” Shylla said when asked about the party’s current standing. He cautioned that real alignments only become clear during polls.

“If you ask that question, not only the UDP but any political party is stable in its own way. It is only when elections come that we will know. We cannot say exactly who will do what, because they will never share their plans in a party meeting. Whatever you have in your mind stays with you. So we cannot comment on anyone’s mind and we cannot blindly say something against them either,” he said.
Shylla said the party is prepared for withdrawals.
“But we are waiting. If anyone takes steps to withdraw from the UDP, then we will have to field someone in their place. We have to make sure that those voters who voted for us will vote for our candidate again in any constituency and that we revive the seat. That is what we want to ensure,” he said.“If somebody makes a statement or wants to go somewhere, we cannot say anything against them. They are allowed to do it. But what we can do as a party is ensure we retain the seat,” he added. On the leadership, Shylla backed the party president.
“What can I think about him? He is our president and we obey him. We work as a team and we take decisions collectively. We make sure that the decisions taken by all of us will benefit the people,” he said.

Addressing reports of discontent within the party, he said, “Maybe they have their own personal feelings, so we cannot comment. But as a party, as a team, we are united.
”On speculation over defections and cross-party talks, Shylla said approaches are normal in politics but the final call rests with individuals.
“We can approach anyone. We can approach NPP MLAs or BJP MLAs, whoever we want. But their decision, their call, is what will make an impact. As of now, anybody can come to anyone. Let them plan. Until and unless they jump, we cannot say anything,” he said.
He reiterated that the UDP has contingency plans.
“Let them plan. We also have our own plan. UDP has its own plan. If somebody plans to jump, we plan how to refill the gap. As I said, we want to retain the seat and for this we have our own plan,” Shylla added.
