Assam: World War II era airport complete one year of civil flights

Guwahati, May 9: Rupsi Airport in lower Assam is a World War-II era Airstrip which was re-developed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN programme of Govt of India.

Rupsi Airport is developed, operated and maintained by Airport Authority of India (AAI).

May 8 was the first anniversary of its successful operations. On 08 May 2021, first commercial flight landed at Rupsi under UDAN 4.0. Flybig Airline started operating ATR-72 type aircraft for sectors Guwahati-Rupsi-Kolkata and Kolkata-Rupsi-Guwahati marking a historic beginning for this area.

Rupsi is the only airport situated in the lower part of Assam.

Rupsi Airport is catering maximum passengers from Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Bongaigaon districts of Assam and Cooch Behar, Aliduarpur districts of West Bengal and parts of Bhutan among others.

People visiting various historical and religious places such as Gauripur Rajbari, Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Dhubri, Raimona National Park, Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary etc. utilize the services of Rupsi Airport.

The Airport is situated in 337 acres and has a terminal building of 3500 sqmt with peak passenger handling capacity of 250. It has a single Runway 05/23 of dimensions 1771M x 30M with two parking bays for ATR-72 type aircrafts.

On 08th May 2022, Rupsi Airport celebrated its 1st Anniversary with the passengers flying from Rupsi. Sweets and gifts were distributed to the passengers and airport staff, stakeholders and their family members.

Hemang Arora, Officer In-charge Rupsi Airport, extended his sincere thanks to all the passengers for successful operations of Rupsi Airport for last one year. He also informed that initially flight operations at Rupsi Airport were on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday and now there will be flights to/from Guwahati and Kolkata all days in a week except Monday.

Arora also mentioned that the passenger response as Rupsi Airport has been very encouraging. Rupsi handled a total of 744 flight with total passenger footfall of 26,181 in its first year of operations.
