Assam: Youth hospitalised after police brutality in custody

Must read

Guwahati, March 26: Assam police allegedly beat up a youth so badly that he had to be admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

The youth has been identified as Amit Haloi.

According to family members of the youth, Basistha police used third-degree methods on him after they picked him up from his residence at Bhetapara in Guwahati.

“Police beat Amit by using batons and belts at Basistha police station injuring him critically,” alleged a family member.

The Basistha police detained him on Monday as he was a suspect in a gold theft case. “Amit was badly thrashed by a female police officer several times in suspect of gold theft case,” he said.

The family member said that he was now undergoing treatment at GMCH in critical condition as he sustained serious injuries in his chest, head and private parts.

It should be mentioned that Amit Haloi’s older brother Mithun was named in a case involving the theft of gold items from the residence of a real estate agent in Bhetapara, Guwahati, in December last year.
