DIBRUGARH, Feb 17: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday organised a large-scale joining programme at its Dibrugarh district headquarters, signalling a major political churn in Upper Assam in the wake of Bhupen Borah’s resignation from the Congress.
The event, held at the BJP’s district office, saw senior party leaders formally induct a significant number of new members into the party fold. The atmosphere was marked by enthusiasm and a visible show of organisational strength.
Party sources claimed that several thousand youths, along with senior Congress workers and supporters, joined the BJP during the programme. Many of the new entrants were reportedly from the Khowang, Duliajan, and Chabua-Lahowal constituencies, areas where the Congress is said to be grappling with internal instability and defections following the leadership crisis.
Observers described the BJP office premises as packed, underscoring the scale of the political shift currently unfolding in Dibrugarh district.
Senior BJP leader Harish Dwivedi attended the programme and welcomed the new members, expressing confidence that the party’s leadership and development agenda at both the Centre and the State continue to attract public support.
District leaders, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the government’s achievements and called for stronger grassroots mobilisation ahead of upcoming political engagements. They reaffirmed the party’s commitment to development, governance, and welfare.
Political analysts say the developments indicate a notable realignment in Upper Assam’s political landscape, with Dibrugarh emerging as a key battleground. The Congress leadership is yet to formally respond to the defections.
