Tura, Feb 17: The Meghalaya chapter of the 25th National School of Drama (NSD) Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM) 2026 concluded successfully in Tura, bringing the world’s largest international theatre festival to the heart of Garo Hills.

Hosted at the District Library Auditorium, the festival was graced by Bernard N. Marak, Member of District Council, Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, as Chief Guest, and Prof. Sujata Gurudev, Pro Vice Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (incharge), Tura Campus, as Guest of Honour.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of NSD, Jyoti Narayan Nath highlighted the importance of cultural dialogue in contemporary theatre. In a message to theatre lovers, NSD Director Chittaranjan Tripathy said the festival’s theme this year — “Samvad Sanskritiyon Ka” — aims to foster dialogue among cultures while promoting underrepresented languages and dialects.

The Tura edition featured two powerful productions on February 17.

The first, KU’BILBAT MUNI (Nightmare of Using Mobile Phone of Children), a Garo-language devised play written and directed by Balsrame A. Sangma and presented by A•Chik Theatre, addressed the growing concern of excessive mobile phone use among children. The play resonated strongly with local audiences for its social relevance and cultural authenticity.

The second production, The Wise Creature, a multilingual play written and directed by Jyoti Narayan Nath and staged by Anubhav – The Actors Guild, Guwahati, blended multiple languages and theatrical traditions, reflecting the diversity that BRM seeks to celebrate.

The 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav, running from January 27 to February 20, features over 277 productions across 228 Indian and international languages, with participation from nine countries and theatre groups from every Indian state and union territory.

By bringing BRM to Tura, NSD reinforced its commitment to decentralising theatre and making it accessible beyond metropolitan centres — placing Meghalaya firmly on the national theatre map.
