SHILLONG, DEC 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively identifying candidates for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, with the intention of contesting a majority of the constituencies, said BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA A L Hek on Monday.
In a press briefing, Hek said, “We have gone ahead to identify candidates in all constituencies. We are working hard to contest in the upcoming elections—if not from all constituencies, we are expecting to contest at least 60‑70 percent of the seats.”
He added that while many aspirants have approached the party, official candidate announcements are yet to be made.
“Many have approached the party, but it is too early to say who the candidates are, as we have not made the announcement of the official candidates,” Hek explained.
The legislator also highlighted the growing public sentiment in favour of the BJP, attributing it to the developmental initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Act East Policy.
“People across the state are leaning toward BJP. They have seen the work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has worked tirelessly towards the development of India, including Meghalaya, through the Act East Policy,” he said.
Regarding post‑election alliances, Hek indicated the party’s openness to cooperate with other parties, particularly the National People’s Party (NPP), depending on seat outcomes.
“We are ready to work together, just as in the MDA in the state government, and even in the District Council, we are ready to work together. But it depends on how many seats we win and how many seats NPP will win.”
