SHILLONG, JAN 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday paid tribute to Kabindra Purakayastha, a stalwart leader and pioneer of the party in North East India, during a condolence meet held at the party’s state headquarters.
Purakayastha, a former Minister of State for Communication in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, was a Member of Parliament from Silchar constituency for three terms.
A dedicated RSS member since 1951, he joined the BJP in 1980 and played a pivotal role in spreading the party’s ideology across the region, strengthening its presence in North Eastern states.
In a statement, BJP Meghalaya expressed its condolences, saying, “With the passing of Shri Purakayastha, BJP North East has lost a guiding light and his absence leaves a void that can never be suitably filled.”
The party acknowledged his tireless efforts in establishing the BJP’s roots in the region, leading to the party’s success in several states.
