BJP welcomes Meghalaya govt’s nod for MPSC reforms, UPSC pattern

Must read

SHILLONG, DEC 4: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed gratitude to the state government for acknowledging its recommendations on reforms to the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations that includes aligning the eligibility criteria with UPSC pattern.

In a statement issued on Thursday, BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said, “The state government has acknowledged certain observations and recommendations of BJP Meghalaya with regards to the MPSC examinations; the format and eligibility criteria being the focus areas for necessary restructuring.”

This came after a letter was issued by the Deputy Secretary in-charge Personnel & AR (A) department on November 26 to the BJP state president informing that: “your suggestion for alignment of the eligibility criteria with the UPSC pattern is acknowledged. The issue will be examined in detail by the government, including feasibility and implementation aspects.”

The party had suggested that the MPSC exams follow the format of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), allowing students to appear for the preliminary stage before completing their graduation. Currently, candidates must have their graduation degrees before applying for the civil services examinations, resulting in a lost year for many qualified candidates.

The BJP also pointed out that the MPSC exams have no fixed schedule, leading to years of uncertain wait for deserving candidates.

“The incessant push by BJP’s senior leaders and the party… has been acknowledged by the Government which has promised detailed examination of the matter, a feasibility study and analysis of possible implementation aspects,” Kharkrang said adding “(We) expressed gratitude and appreciation towards the Meghalaya government in general and to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in particular for accepting the merits of the party’s suggestions.”

The party’s continuous push for aligning MPSC with UPSC is aimed at creating a developed environment and brighter future for the state’s citizens, Kharkrang concluded.
