BJP’s landslide victory in Assam; Sonowal, Himanta wins

Guwahati, May 2: BJP is all set for an absolute majority in Assam. The saffron party is leading in more than 77 assembly seats, in the house of 126. Jubilant over the successful outcome of the BJP, Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal said that the party will form the government in Assam.

Sonowal won from Majuli constituency. This is his second consecutive victory. Sonowal defeated his nearest rival Rajib Lochan Pegu of Congress by a margin of over 42,000 votes. Taking to Twitter, Sonowal lauded the party’s win in the state. He called the win a ‘victory for Barak-Brahmaputra, Hills and Plains’ and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma won from Jalukbari defeating his nearest rival, Congress’ Romen Chandra Borthakur, by 1,01,911 votes.

Speaking to the media, BJP’s election face Sarma said, “BJP will form the government and the CM will also be from BJP”.

“It would be my privilege to represent the constituency for a fifth consecutive term. My gratitude to the people of Jalukbari, PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda,” said Himanta.

Anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi won in Sibsagar, while self-declared Congress party’s CM face and State President of Congress Ripun Bora lost in Gohpur constituency against Utpal Bora of BJP, who won with a margin of 14,118 votes.

Conceding the defeat, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Our party will continue to play the role of an effective opposition in the State.”

The ruling BJP-led NDA in Assam is leading in 77 assembly seats, while the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress is ahead in 40 places, according to the trends available on the Election Commission’s website. Assam has a 126-member Assembly and a party requires 64 seats for a simple majority.

The voting for the Assam Assembly elections, which was held in three phases — March 27, April 1, and April 6, was concluded on April 6 with an impressive turnout of 82.04%.
