Guwahati, Nov 9: The bodies of three missing students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar were recovered from a waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Sarva Kritika (20), Sauhard Rai (20), and Radhika Kumari (19). Police said Kritika and Rai were residents of Uttar Pradesh, while Radhika hailed from Bihar.
According to reports, the students had gone for an outing on Saturday morning and reportedly slipped and fell into the waterfall near Harangajao village.
While the body of one student was recovered on Saturday evening, the remaining two were found around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, officials said.
Speaking to reporters, Farukh Ahmed, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Dima Hasao, said they received information about the incident on Saturday afternoon and immediately dispatched two teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to the spot.
“After a thorough search, one body was recovered on Saturday evening, and two more were found today under the water. All three bodies have been sent to Haflong for post-mortem examination,” Ahmed said.
NIT Silchar Director Professor Dilip Kumar Baidya confirmed that all three were first-year students and had left the institute premises without following campus protocols.

“We have a rule that every student must inform the concerned authorities before going out. Unfortunately, some students violate this rule, and it happened in this case as well,” Baidya said.
He added that the parents of the students had been informed and requested to visit the institute. According to Dima Hasao police, the parents of two students have already reached the district, while the others are on their way.
“Since the incident occurred in Dima Hasao, the local police are handling the legal formalities. If the parents wish to collect the bodies directly from Haflong, they will be allowed to do so. If they prefer the bodies to be brought to the NIT campus, we will facilitate that as well,” the director added.
Waterfalls are a major attraction in Dima Hasao, drawing tourists, trekkers, and students alike. The district is home to the spectacular Panimur Waterfall, often called the “Niagara of the Northeast,” known for its rapids and scenic beauty along the Kopili River. The Bendao Baiglai Waterfall, a striking triple cascade, carries a local legend that adds cultural significance to its natural charm. Other waterfalls such as Mahur and Borail further enhance the district’s appeal for nature lovers and adventure seekers, making it a popular destination but also one that requires caution during excursions.
