Bodoland is casting its glow on the sports map of the country, PM Modi

Must read

Guwahati, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, praised the remarkable transformation of Assam’s Bodoland region, highlighting how football has emerged as a unifying force and a powerful symbol of youth empowerment and regional resurgence.

“Picture this — the morning sun touches the hills, its light slowly spilling into the plains. As the day breaks, a wave of football enthusiasts marches forward. The whistle blows, and within moments, the ground erupts in cheers and slogans. With every pass, every goal, the excitement builds,” PM Modi narrated. “You must be wondering… what a beautiful world that is.

He then said this picture is the reality of Bodoland, a major region of Assam. Bodoland today stands out in the country with a new face, a new identity.” He emphasised the visible energy and confidence among the youth, particularly evident on the football field.

A key example of this sporting revolution is the Bodoland CEM Cup, which has turned into a massive celebration of unity and grassroots participation. “More than 3,700 teams, around 70,000 players — and among them, a large number of our daughters have participated! These statistics tell the story of a big change in Bodoland,” Modi said.

He reflected on the region’s past struggles, acknowledging that there was once a time when unrest and limited opportunities defined the area. “But today, there are new dreams in their eyes and the courage of self-reliance in their hearts,” he said, pointing to the rise of homegrown football stars like Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, and Manbir Basumatari.

“These are not just names of football players – they represent the identity of a new generation that has catapulted Bodoland from the football field to the national stage,” he said, noting that many of them trained with limited resources and overcame difficult circumstances.

The Prime Minister also used the occasion to promote the importance of fitness and personal well-being. Reminding listeners of one of his past suggestions to combat obesity, he quipped, “Reduce 10% oil in food, reduce obesity. When you’re fit, you will be a super hit in life.”

Bodoland’s success story, powered by sport and determination, has become a shining example of how peace, opportunity, and youth engagement can redefine a region.
