Chada And Chambugong Mahari win Tura Challenge Inter-Mahari Basketball Tournament

Tura, June 29: The “Tura Challenge” Inter Mahari Basketball Tournament reached its thrilling climax on Saturday at the Don Bosco College basketball court in Tura. The grand final witnessed compelling final matches – Chada vs Mangsang in the women’s and Gabil vs Chambugong in the men’s categories, that captivated a packed house of enthusiastic supporters.

In the women’s final, the Chada Mahari team delivered a dominant performance against Mangsang, maintaining a strong lead throughout the game to secure a decisive 66-40 victory. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the women’s finals was awarded to Silnangchi Chada Marak from the victorious Chada mahari team.

The men’s final presented an equally engaging contest between Chambugong and Gabil. The Gabil Mahari team held an initial lead through the second quarter, providing an exciting start to the game. However, Chambugong subsequently launched a robust offensive strategy, rapidly accumulating points to ultimately claim an 89-75 win. Bian Karik Ch Marak from the Chambugong mahari team was named the MVP for the men’s finals.

This 9-day tournament also marked the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club’s 25th anniversary. It was a collaborative effort of the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club New Tura, the District Sports Office, Tura, and the District Basketball Association (DBA), and sponsored by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma.

Commencing on June 20, the tournament’s core objective was to cultivate camaraderie among the various ‘Maharis’ (clans) of Garo Hills and encourage a healthy lifestyle through sports, particularly among the youth. The spirited competition drew significant participation, with 10 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams vying for top honors throughout the event.

Meghalaya Education Minister, Rakkam A. Sangma, attended the finals as the Chief Guest, and delivered an inspiring address that resonated with players and attendees alike, along with  Walseng Ch Sangma, President of the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club, and Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco College.

Post-match presentations included a special segment by Adah Feodora D. Shira and a compelling demonstration by the Weightlifting Association, Tura, and a dynamic choreography performance by Laisve Dance Studio.
