Guwahati, June 25: Even as parts of Arunachal Pradesh battle flash floods and landslides, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on July 25 issued a fresh warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Northeast India over the next week, raising fears of further flooding and disruptions in the region.
According to the IMD, widespread rainfall is expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura until July 1. The weather office has specifically warned of extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya on June 28, with very heavy rain also likely in Arunachal Pradesh from June 27 to 29.
The warning comes at a time when several parts of the Northeast are already reeling from the impact of intense monsoon rains. Flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district have led to casualties, while landslides and road blockages have disrupted connectivity in several areas.

The IMD has cautioned that the impending spell of heavy rain could trigger localised flooding, waterlogging in urban areas, landslides, mudslides and disruptions to transport and communication networks. The agency also warned of possible damage to standing crops and vulnerable structures.
For the farming community, the weather department has issued a series of advisories. Farmers in Assam have been asked to ensure quick drainage of excess water from paddy nurseries, jute, ginger, turmeric and vegetable fields, while those in Meghalaya have been advised to strengthen drainage systems in rice nurseries, maize and banana plantations and protect young seedlings from heavy rain.
Livestock owners have also been urged to keep animals sheltered, store fodder safely and take measures to prevent fish from escaping from overflowing ponds.
