SHILLONG, FEB 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the explosion at an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, which has claimed several lives. In a social media post, he conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
“Pained by the mishap in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.
Also, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced an ex gratia assistance of ₹3 lakh from the Government of Meghalaya to the next of kin of each deceased victim.
On Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills coal mine incident, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy says, “An accident has occurred in illegal coal mines in Meghalaya. Several people died. There is no Govt of India coal mine in Meghalaya. Not even one block of coal mine has been auctioned to date. Neither PSU coal mines nor commercial coal mines exist there. Illegal coal mining occurs there. This needs to be stopped under the supervision of the State Govt. We have been writing to State Govts again and again to stop illegal coal mining. Still, mafia runs illegal coal mines at various places and makes innocent people work there…I have sought a report from Meghalaya Govt…I urge all State Govts to stop illegal mining. There should be no compromise. Such accidents should not occur. Illegal mining should not take place.”

The Ministry of Coal is in touch with the Meghalaya Government to ensure a swift rescue of those that are still trapped inside.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences and said the Assam government is in touch with the Meghalaya authorities. Noting reports that some victims may be from Assam, Sarma said all possible assistance would be extended to affected families from the state once details are confirmed.
