Guwahati, June 6: The Assam Congress has demanded a CBI investigation into the Kaziranga mining scandal, alleging a nexus between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang.
Former MP Ripun Borah claimed that the illegal mining activities in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape are being shielded by top political figures.
Borah alleged that Ronghang is enabling the destruction of forest resources, biodiversity, and plantations in Karbi Anglong. He also accused Ronghang of building a ₹200 crore residence in Guwahati and warned that he will be held accountable when the Congress returns to power in 2026.
The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) report has confirmed ongoing mining operations in violation of the Supreme Court’s 2019 order. The court had banned all mining and related activities in and around Kaziranga National Park, including rivers and streams flowing from the Karbi Anglong hill ranges into the park.
The Congress has demanded the immediate arrest of Tuliram Ronghang on sedition charges and a CBI probe into the scandal. Borah also criticized the state government’s decision to withdraw the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) notification for 3,600 sq km around Kaziranga, alleging that it was done to facilitate illegal mining.
The demand for a central probe into the Kaziranga mining scandal adds new pressure on the Assam government, raising both political and environmental stakes.
