Guwahati, June 6: The northeastern states of India continue to grapple with the devastating impact of floods and landslides triggered by relentless rainfall since May 29.

The disaster has claimed 52 lives across the region, with Assam being one of the worst-hit states.

21 people have lost their lives in Assam, with 5.6 lakh people still affected by the floods. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that over 14,739 hectares of crop lands were affected in 1506 villages under 21 districts.

12 fatalities have been reported in Arunachal, with over 1,000 people affected in 156 villages across 23 districts. The state’s disaster management officials have confirmed widespread destruction, including damage to roads, power lines, and water supply lines.

In Meghalaya, over 1,100 people across 49 villages have been affected by landslides, flash floods, and power disruptions. Six people lost their lives in the state.

Three army personnel were killed, and nine others went missing after a landslide struck a military camp in Chhaten, near Lachen town in Sikkim.

Tourists stranded in northern Sikkim district have been evacuated by choppers, with 59 tourists airlifted yesterday.

Two deaths have been reported, although the flood situation has begun to improve, with rainfall subsiding and river levels dropping significantly below the danger mark. Over 10,000 people are still staying in government-run relief camps.

One death each has been reported in Manipur and Nagaland. While the flood situation in Manipur has eased, 1.66 lakh people, mostly in the Imphal Valley, continue to be affected.

The authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and assistance to those affected. Rescue operations are ongoing, with multiple agencies involved, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and offered all possible assistance to the affected states. Union Minister JP Nadda has urged party state units and karyakartas to provide all possible assistance.

The situation remains grim, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting further downpours in the coming days. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are taking all necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
