Guwahati, March 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on his Assam visit this Sunday communicated to western Assam that goes for the poll in the third Phase on April 6 by calling the Congress inclined to minority votes and promising to solve the flood crisis in the state.

“Congress see vote bank in infiltrators. In Kerala, Congress has formed an alliance with Muslims league, in West Bengal the forged alliance with ISF and in Assam with (Badruddin) Ajmal,” Shah said addressing a crowd in Margherita, a crucial seat in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Maulana Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front has a major following among Bengali-speaking Muslims in the chhar areas of Western Assam that shares riverine borders prone to infiltration with neighbouring country Bangladesh.

“In last 15 years Congress rule in Assam they had failed to stop illegal influx from Bangladesh. For their cheap vote bank politics, they encouraged infiltration. But if our government forms government in Assam, we promise that we will free Assam from the illegal influx,” Shah said.

Shah, in his address, while campaigning for the party’s Margherita candidate, sitting MLA Bhaskar Sharma, also addresses the flood issue that is not just perennial in Upper Assam, but also in Western Assam where the river widens before it enters into Bangladesh as Padma.

“Within five years, we would solve flood problem in Assam. For flood-free Assam, we have done a satellite survey and found that there are many water bodies where we are thinking to divert the floodwater in a scientific method. In last five years our government is working hard to end the several decades militancy problems in Assam. Now, the militancy problem has been solve and within five years the militancy problems will be completely solved,” Amit Shah said.

He also claimed that the BJP government has made Assam “Andolan mukt (protests-free)” and “Atankwadmukt (terrorism free” during their tenure and if voted to power, will make Assam flood-free.

Shah’s Sunday address coincides with the announcement of the party’s candidate list for the third phase announced by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh several hundred kilometres away in the party’s Assam headquarters in Guwahati.

The saffron party has announced 17 names to contest in the third phase and said it will contest in 92 seats while the rest of the 126-member Assam Assembly will be to its allies Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal.
