Shillong, March 5: Congress president and former Shillong MP Vincent Pala said his party will not discuss the Shillong Lok Sabha by‑poll until a month after the death of late MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, criticising the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for moving early.
“His family members are still in mourning, lots of people are still visiting (his residence),” Pala said.
“I don’t feel it’s right to speak politics at this stage.”
He noted it had only been 12–15 days since Syngkon’s death.
“I prefer the matter be discussed in the party, and we have not yet decided,” he added, speaking while traveling from Tura to Shillong.
Pala said Congress would wait at least a month before naming a candidate, stressing no internal discussion had taken place yet.
Asked, the Congress chief said that the Voice of the People Party had ignored mourning protocols by speaking on the Shillong Lok Sabha by‑poll so soon after Dr Syngkon’s death.
“I feel the VPP forget that he passed away hardly 12-15 days. To discss politics, I personally feel it is too early. I don’t know how VPP (has taken a decision so soon),” he stated.
The VPP has announced the name of its spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh as candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll.
