Shillong, Dec 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his support for the New Shillong Township where a new Administrative City will come up.

The mega project is to help decongest Shillong city, which has become extremely crowded and the traffic has become a nightmare to traverse at any point in the day. The city, with its old roads that are near impossible to expand, sees regularly long traffic snarls as it is overwhelmed by vehicles, both local and outside.

“I also shared with him the vision of having the New Shillong Township and Administrative City where we are planning to put up a new administrative city and new secretariat and shared with him the plan, the design, rough designs and also asked for his support to make sure that the project does move forward,” Conrad said after meeting the PM.

In addition, the CM apprised the PM on the details of development works and different programs, the status of these programs and how the state is doing.

“Brief report was submitted and I gave a small presentation to him and he was very happy to see the different kind of works that are happening in the state. And he was especially very pleased to see that the overall developmental budget for the state in the last few years has gone up by more than double in the last 5 years, almost touching triple of what it used to be 5-6 years back,” he informed.

He told the PM about the vision his government has for the State in the next 5 years and that his help and support was vital to achieve this vision.

“He (PM Modi) was very happy to see these developments and he assured of all possible support from his side,” Conrad said.

The CM also met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and briefed her on the status of different projects going on through the Capital Investment Fund that the Government of India is supporting different states with through the externally aided projects.

He requested the Finance Minister to support the State further in the externally aided projects as the Government of India has put a cap on different states on the limit to which states can take externally aided projects.

“And hence we have requested her to increase the ceiling and give additional projects to states who are performing states, like Meghalaya which have already taken a large number of projects. But since our performance has been good, we requested that would be supported,” he said.

The Finance Minister also, he said, has given positive response to state’s request and assured support.
