Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Covid-19 Step Down Hospital with Paediatric ICU and the 13 KL Liquid Medical Oxygen Plant at Umsawli in Shillong on Saturday.

These facilitates have been installed as part of State’s preparation to deal with the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic as well as to meet the current demand of oxygen for Covid-19 patients in the state.

“I am sure that these new facilities will further strengthen the healthcare infrastructure of Shillong and greatly help the people in the times to come,” Shah said.

Shah is on a two-day visit to Shillong wherein he is scheduled to attend important meetings and inaugurate several projects and initiatives.

The Union Home Minister landed in Meghalaya on Saturday afternoon around 12 noon on a Border Security Force (BSF) place at Shillong Airport in Umroi, 30 km from Shillong city. He was accompanied by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), G. Kishan Reddy.

He was received by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma along with Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, Dr Jitendra Singh at the airport.

Visit to NESAC

He first went to North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) at Umiam, Ri Bhoi district, where he laid the foundation for the Multi-purpose Convention Center cum Space Exhibition facility for the Centre.

He also chaired a meeting of NESAC Society to review the operation of NESAC which was attended by Chief Ministers of all North Eastern States. The meeting discussed about application of science and technology for mapping of forest gap areas, expansion of the land area for horticulture development, identification and rejuvenation of wetlands, diversion of flood water and assessment of bamboo resources for livelihood needs.

Stating that NESAC plays a key role in stimulating the overall growth of the North-Eastern region by using space science and technology, he assured that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government “is committed to providing advanced technology support to the region, that can transform the lives of our people of the North-Eastern states.”
