Tura, March 10: The district administration of West Garo Hills has imposed curfew and prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, ahead of the General Election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) 2026, citing concerns over possible law and order disturbances.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal, the decision was taken in view of reported opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC elections, which could potentially lead to obstruction, intimidation and disruption of normal life.

The curfew will remain in force from 12:00 a.m. on March 10 to 12:00 a.m. on March 11 across the West Garo Hills district.
Under the order, vehicular movement may be restricted, and carrying or concealing lathis, sticks, stones, firearms, missiles or any lethal weapons has been prohibited. The order also prohibits the unlawful assembly of five or more persons and any attempt to obstruct the lawful functioning of shops, establishments, and offices.
The district administration warned that any violation of the order will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions of law.
Officials said the order was issued ex parte due to the emergent nature of the situation and urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming GHADC elections.
