Guwahati, Dec 26 : Large parts of Northeast India are set to witness dense fog, colder nights and largely dry weather over the coming days, with light rain and snowfall likely only in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department said shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur at isolated locations across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, with dense to very dense fog expected at select pockets, particularly over Assam and Meghalaya. Such conditions may disrupt early morning road, rail and air travel, especially in low-lying and riverine areas.

While dry weather is expected to prevail across most of the region, IMD has forecast light rain at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, along with light snowfall in its higher reaches. No significant change in minimum temperatures is anticipated in the short term, though a gradual falling trend in night temperatures is likely across the Northeast, deepening winter conditions.

In Guwahati and adjoining areas, mornings are expected to remain foggy or misty, with skies clearing later in the day. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 22°C, while minimum temperatures may range between 12°C and 14°C over the next few days.

IMD attributed the prevailing winter pattern to a subtropical westerly jet stream with core winds of around 125 knots at approximately 12.6 km above mean sea level over Northeast India. This atmospheric feature is contributing to stable, dry conditions over the plains while allowing snowfall in higher Himalayan terrain.

The weather department has advised commuters and travellers to remain cautious during early morning hours due to reduced visibility caused by fog, especially as dense fog conditions are expected to intensify at isolated locations across the region.
