Dibrugarh ‘kidnapping’ claim unravels; girl left home to pursue modelling, say police

DIBRUGARH, June 8: A suspected kidnapping case that sparked concern across Dibrugarh and Tinsukia on Monday took an unexpected turn after police concluded that the 19-year-old woman at the centre of the case had left home voluntarily and fabricated the abduction story.

The case surfaced after a complaint was lodged at Dibrugarh Police Station alleging that the teenager had been abducted by an unidentified person while on a morning walk with her mother around 5.30 am.

According to the complaint, the girl’s mother claimed that while she was plucking flowers, an unknown individual allegedly covered her daughter’s mouth with a handkerchief, causing her to lose consciousness before taking her away. The girl was later traced to Tinsukia Railway Station, where she reportedly told family members that she had been confined inside a sack.

However, a detailed police investigation, including the examination of CCTV footage and questioning of the girl, found no evidence to support the abduction claim.

Senior Superintendent of Police Gurav Abhijit Dilip said the inquiry revealed that the teenager had voluntarily left home and travelled by auto-rickshaw to Banipur Railway Station with plans to go to Guwahati and pursue a career in modelling.

During questioning, the girl reportedly told investigators that her parents opposed her modelling ambitions, prompting her to leave home without informing them.

Police said she boarded a train but became frightened after reaching Tinsukia Railway Station. She then got off the train and contacted her father, allegedly claiming that she had been abducted by unknown persons.

A medical examination and subsequent inquiry found no evidence of kidnapping, wrongful confinement or any other criminal offence, police said.

Following the completion of legal formalities, the teenager was handed over to her parents.

The case, which had triggered widespread concern and speculation on social media, has now been closed as a missing person matter, with investigators ruling out any criminal wrongdoing.
