Dibrugarh, May 9: Dibrugarh Police on Saturday busted an alleged extortion racket operating in the name of banned militant outfit ULFA(I) and arrested three persons from Moran in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Acting on information about extortion calls and SMS messages received by a doctor, Dibrugarh Police launched an operation led by DSP (HQ) Nayan Moni Barua.
During the investigation, police identified the three accused as Krishna Moni Chetia of Bahanibari in Khowang, Jintu Gogoi of Nohat Mazgaon in Demow, and Sanjay Gogoi of Muramara Thangaon in Khowang.

According to police, the trio allegedly sent extortion messages to the victim and also delivered a letter purportedly in the name of ULFA(I), signed as “Xadhin Axom”, demanding ₹60 lakh near the doctor’s residence.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were allegedly involved in similar extortion attempts targeting multiple individuals across Upper Assam, particularly in Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts.

All three accused are currently in the custody of Moran Police Station for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
