Dibrugarh, March 6: The historic Dibrugarh Press Club has finally secured a permanent address more than five decades after its establishment. The new office of the club will be constructed at South Jalan Tea Estate in the Chowkidingee area of Dibrugarh.
The foundation stone of the proposed state-of-the-art building was jointly laid on Friday by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The ceremony was completed with a traditional Bhumi Pujan performed according to religious rituals.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister described the day as historic for the journalist community in Dibrugarh.
“Today is a historic day for the Dibrugarh Press Club. After 50 years, the club will have a modern building. We hope the construction will be completed within the scheduled timeframe. I extend my best wishes to all the officials and members of the Dibrugarh Press Club,” Sarma said.
Union Minister Sonowal also congratulated the journalists of the region, stating that the new building would support the media fraternity in continuing its role as the fourth pillar of democracy.
“The historic Dibrugarh Press Club, which has completed 50 years, will finally have a permanent address. Journalists from this region have played an important role in strengthening democracy through quality reporting. With this initiative, we hope they will continue to serve society with greater dedication,” he said.
The programme was moderated by Press Club Vice-President Anil Poddar and presided over by President Manash Jyoti Dutta, while General Secretary Ripunjoy Das explained the objectives of the project.
Speaking at the event, Assam Minister Bimal Borah said a strong media strengthens the foundation of democracy and nation-building.
“When the media—the fourth pillar of democracy—is strong, the foundation of the country becomes stronger. The Dibrugarh Press Club has been playing an important role socially and culturally through its work in journalism,” he said.
The event was attended by Power Minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli, MLAs Binod Hazarika and Chakradhar Gogoi, Dibrugarh Mayor Dr Saikat Patra, and several prominent citizens.
Among those present were land donors Mrigendra Jalan and Mrityunjay Jalan, along with social worker and chartered accountant Jyoti Prasad Kanoi, Bikul Deka, Chairman of Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited, academicians, architects and representatives from civil society.
The proposed model building of the Dibrugarh Press Club is expected to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 8.70 crore.
