Dibrugarh, June 2: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex at Khanikar in Dibrugarh, which is poised to become Assam’s largest multi-sports stadium.
During the inspection, Sonowal assessed various infrastructural components of the project and offered suggestions for its further development.

“I firmly believe this modern sports infrastructure will open new avenues for sporting excellence in Dibrugarh district as well as the entire Upper Assam region. This stadium will play a significant role in nurturing the sporting talent of our youth,” Sonowal said.
Spread across 104 bighas of land and being developed at a cost of Rs 233 crore, the complex currently has a seating capacity of around 5,000 spectators under Phase-I, which was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 30, 2026.

Phase-II of the project, sanctioned at an additional cost of Rs 209 crore, will increase the seating capacity to 35,000, further strengthening its position as Assam’s largest multi-sports venue.
The Phase-I infrastructure includes an indoor stadium, swimming pool complex, football ground, synthetic athletic track, lawn tennis, volleyball and badminton courts, residential hostels for athletes, a VIP block, and several other world-class facilities.
