The Assam government today centrally observed Asom Divas, also known as Sukapha Divas, with grand celebrations at Nazira in Sivasagar district on Tuesday. The day commemorates the arrival of Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom (1228–1826), who laid the foundation of ‘Bor Asom’ (Greater Assam) nearly 800 years ago.
Observed annually on December 2, Asom Divas celebrates the advent of the first Ahom king in 1228. Chaolung Sukapha—whose title means “Great Lord”—was a Tai prince from Mong Mao in present-day China. He crossed the Patkai Hills with his followers to establish the Ahom dynasty, which shaped Assam’s political and cultural landscape for nearly six centuries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings on the occasion. In a post on X, Modi said the day is an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to Sukapha’s vision. “Over the last few years, the NDA governments at the Centre and in Assam are working tirelessly to boost the progress of Assam. Remarkable strides have been made in enhancing physical and social infrastructure. Numerous steps are being taken towards popularising the Tai-Ahom culture and Tai language. This will greatly benefit the youth of Assam.”
