Dorbar Shnong Mukroh urges Centre to fast-track CBI probe into 2022 firing incident

Shillong,  Nov 23: The Dorbar Shnong Mukroh Pyllun has renewed its demand for the Centre to expedite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and ensure justice for the families of the five villagers who were killed.

In a statement issued after a community gathering in Mukroh Village, the Dorbar said the people continued to mourn the loss of Tal Nartiang, Sik Talang, Nikhasi Dhar, Shirup Sumer and Thal Shadap, who died on November 22, 2022, after Assam Police personnel allegedly opened fire along the Meghalaya–Assam border.

“We pay homage to our five fellow villagers on their death anniversary with a heavy heart and bitterness,” the Dorbar said.

The village authority said the incident was a direct fallout of the unresolved interstate boundary dispute. The Dorbar reiterated accusations that Assam has been intruding into Meghalaya’s territory and warned that continued territorial pressure could heighten tensions.

“We urge the Government of India to intervene and resolve the long-pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya,” the Dorbar said. “Assam must be directed to stop any intrusion into Mukroh until there is a final settlement of the boundary.”

Despite assurances from the Centre and both state governments, villagers say the CBI investigation has made no tangible progress. The Dorbar expressed frustration that justice has been delayed for three years, compounding the trauma of the affected families.

“We solemnly urge upon the Government of India to expedite the CBI’s investigation… to deliver justice to the aggrieved families,” the statement added.

“We hope the Government of India will listen to our humble plea and deliver us justice, and will not compel us to stray from the path of righteousness,” the Dorbar said.
