Shillong, July 17: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, over 400 students from seven local schools were introduced to the exciting world of drone technology during a one-day hands-on workshop held at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Smit on Wednesday.

Jointly organised by Don Bosco HSS Smit, the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) and the Department of Geology, St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, the workshop aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world technological innovation for Class 9 and 10 students many of whom had never seen or interacted with drones before.

The event brought together students from Loreto Mary Ward School (Umphyrnai), St. Francis De Sales Secondary School (Lad Nongkrem), Ibasara Secondary School (Iewpomtiah), Mount Gerizim Secondary School (Smit), St. Peter Secondary School (Smit), and the host school itself. The total participation stood at an impressive 449 students, showing a growing appetite for science and technology among young minds in rural Meghalaya.

During the inaugural session, Br. (Dr.) Albert Longley Dkhar SDB, Principal of Don Bosco HSS, encouraged students to dream big and embrace new learning tools. “Workshops like these do more than just teach—they ignite imagination,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Director General of NECTAR, underscored the growing importance of drones across sectors such as agriculture, disaster management, and infrastructure development. “The technology you’re seeing today isn’t just the future—it’s already here. And you are the generation that will take it forward,” he told the students.

But the real highlight came during the technical session, led by Nitin Sharma, a drone pilot with NECTAR. From the science of how drones fly to their everyday applications, Sharma guided students through an interactive session that combined theory, live demonstrations, and hands-on activities. For many students, it was their first experience handling this kind of technology—one that left them inspired and eager to learn more.

Students who typically associate school with textbooks and blackboards were now exploring flight paths, understanding controls and watching drones take off before their eyes.
