Mankachar, June 13: Assam Police seized suspected heroin weighing about 19 grams and apprehended an alleged drug peddler during a late-night anti-narcotics operation in Mankachar of South Salmara-Mankachar district.
Police said the operation was launched on the night of June 12, following specific intelligence inputs about an alleged network involved in the possession, consumption and sale of narcotic substances at No. 2 Pubergaon village under Mankachar Police Station.
Acting on the information, a police team led by Sub-Inspectors Rustom Ali Ahmed and Manmohan Chandra Roy conducted a raid at the residence of Najmul Islam.
However, police said the prime suspect, Najmul Islam, managed to flee before the team arrived at the location.

During the operation, police apprehended Rakibul Islam (33), a resident of No. 2 Pubergaon village, from the spot.
A subsequent search of the premises led to the recovery of 17 plastic vials containing suspected heroin, weighing approximately 19 grams, including the weight of the containers, from a kitchen room.
The suspected contraband was seized in the presence of independent witnesses after following the required legal procedures, police said.
The apprehended accused, along with the seized narcotics, was brought to Mankachar Police Station for further investigation and legal action under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding accused and are investigating possible links to a wider drug trafficking network in the area.
