‘Due to safety issue’: Meghalaya govt drops Rilbong-Barik flyover on defence advice

SHILLONG, APR 28: The state government has dropped the idea of an elevated road from Rilbong junction to Barik point and will instead go for four-laning of the stretch, based on advice from defence authorities citing safety and security reasons.

Informing this on Tuesday, Tynsong said, “From the government side, we also prefer elevated road right from junction of Rilbong till Barik point but again, after discussion with the defence authority, the defence authority advised us to go for four-lane due to safety issue. So, better go for four-laning instead of going for elevated road.”

He said the decision was taken after consultations with multiple agencies.

“That is why we ultimately reach a conclusion by saying that okay let us go for the joint inspection from the state PWD, district administration and also from NHIDCL along with defence authority,” he said.

On the status of the four-laning project, Tynsong said survey work has begun.

“Now for this four-laning, the survey has started and the joint survey with 101 Area army officials is still on,” said.

The proposed four-laning will cover the Rilbong junction to Barik point stretch in Shillong.

According to him, the Detailed Project Report will be prepared after the ongoing joint survey with 101 Area army officials, PWD, district administration, and NHIDCL is completed.
